It was a bit of a personal shock to find this article on HN. I attended Scarsdale High and AP English was one of my favorite classes. That said, it was the strength of a wonderful, memorable teacher -- Julie Leerburger -- that made the cl

Note that if you cut and paste Alex's .ackrc (at least in Firefox 3), you'll get one leading whitespace character on each line. This will cause problems if you don't notice it. :)

An interesting method, but as the comments say, getting your load balancer or proxy to do the right thing is the tip of the iceberg. Migrating your database on the fly requires schema version-aware code, facilities for split-brain upgrades

I heartily recommend the author's previous work in Wired, "High Tech Cowboys of the Deep Sea." A bit lower on the drama dial, still quite interesting: http://www.wired.com/science/discoveries/magazine/16-03/ff_s...

"Business Plan Preparation" is a line-item? In my mind the credibility of this document is already shot for this audience, and we're not even half-way in. Two founders? 50/50. If you find a co-founder that you see eye-to-eye with and you

This article was written in February 2007. The author, Dmitri Davydov, founded PickyDomains.com and promotes it from elsewhere on nichegeek.com (see the front page, for example). The current incarnation of PickyDomains' service is at id 72

What a fun service. I can't remember the last time I used the word "fun" in reference to a plain text editor. :) It's really interesting to watch the POSTs fly by and consider the implications of out-of-order updates, breaks in the open d

I wonder if the impact of lawsuits on public opinion is evolving in the age of the Internet? I don't know the specifics of this suit other than having read this article, but it seems that going after SourceForge is the kind of litigious ove

If two founders can't agree on a critical decision, is the situation any better if they're 70/30 rather than 50/50? The person who "loses" will not feel good about it, and I think that feeling is compounded by the inequality in ownership.

I posted the link with Gabor's name thinking many HN readers might appreciate the Xobni connection. Of course, I forgot that his domain was "gaborcselle.com" and that it would appear right next to the title in HN. So blame me, not him. :

This is a strong set of questions. The only one that didn't ring true was #8, ownership. For a two-founder company, I strongly believe that 50/50 is the correct structure. Anything less breeds long-term ill will. What if, as Gabor notes,

Here's a different four point plan for Yahoo! 1. Cut costs to the bone. Ruthlessly reduce headcount, non-core services, and the executive roster. Go until Wall Street thinks you're insane, then cut a bit more for good measure. I'm talkin
