The thing I really don't understand is the persistent meme that companies have some obligation to their shareholders above and beyond their obligation to their employees, common ethics or the spirit of the law. It's practically an

I'd call it "avoids reporting stories that hurt their funding partner" more than "pushing the agenda" personally. Very subjective opinion, though.

It's both. The news isn't pushing a particular agenda, they'll take anything that pushes people's buttons and grabs their eyeballs, whether it's this or another missing white girl.

That wasn't what he said, though, was it? If you assume he meant inflation adjusted dollars, what he said was objectively correct. You can draw your own conclusions.

Honestly, I'm kind of happy that there's at least one person who knows the difference between HTML and TCP/IP helping to shape the conversation now.

It is actually difficult to find talent, though. The fact that idiots are claiming this for the wrong reasons doesn't mean that smart people can't also think so for the right reasons.

Well, don't work for those companies. There's plenty of companies around that actively discourage hero coding by anybody (aside from exceptional circumstances) because it illustrates a deeper flaw in their system.

I'd never work at EA, either. Although they're the other side of the same economics, because young nerds who don't know any better and like video games will work there for less than an average tech firm, and less still than

How about paying a market wage, instead of offering a "free lunch" to people that cannot negotiate. Who can't negotiate? It's your fault if you can't/won't negotiate. I'd posit that the reason fina

Why would 'less government' be less complex law or less abuse of it? 'Less government' typically means spending less money on government employees, when you hear it from libertarians. Paper's cheap, word are free,

Sure, the crazy symbolic operator overloading and a bunch of libraries that encourage you do do things like a :=: b and have it mean something. Also, there's something about the net sum of the type system where it feels like there are

A lot of people (myself included) see Scala as being one step forward, two steps back. Some good features, and then a whole bunch of poorly thought out, wankerish features that can only serve to screw up your code base if some developer ge

That's fine, you're just in a tiny minority. Code-as-data is actually a win that you can't get from procedural languages, which is why I brought it up. It makes solutions to complex configuration spaces possible that aren&#x

Yeah, I read the clojure book back in like 2009 and used it a little. I thought it had a lot of neat ideas but when it comes to just getting a job done, if it's not a problem where pure functional programming brings a lot of value (th

Immutability's great, I pass around Callables of final variables in Java all the time to accomplish CSP and immutability. That's not to say you can only have immutability, though, we're humans here and capable of reasoning

As a veteran Java programmer, I like that Go is a handicapped Java. Please force all of my coworkers to use delegation rather than implementation inheritance and make CSP-style concurrency easier to code than synchronized-style.

You're saying that the type system has something to do with functional programming. I'm saying that if Scheme, LISP and Haskell are all functional languages, obviously the type system is besides the point -- they're radically

I'd go a step further and say that controlling side effects, as a consequence of pure-functional design, is a bigger part of FP than any given type system. But hey, what do I know, I just did the SICP exercises a decade ago and forgot

That sounds like it's actually a complaint about strong typing -- if everything's the same type, you can do that now by passing around first class functions.
