If they would stop announcing things that suck, we would have more faith that the next thing they announce will not suck. It is just straightforward extrapolation.

They are announcing that you can watch shows on your television, while hooked into your mobile device, which is being controlled by your tablet device, which is hooked into your oven all while sitting in the refrigerator.

I think you didn't understand that paragraph. The implication is that Goldman couldn't get the stock, and in fact did not bother, and just lied and said they did.

Does anyone have a link to the actual solution? It must be a pretty small equation. Searching around I am unable to find anything -- a testament to how useless Internet news is.

It seems likely from your reply that you have no education in matters related to vision. The human visual system uses other things too, yes, but silhouettes are one of the most dominant features because they are most invariant to lighting

Cute site. It doesn't change the fact that the iOS icon standard is terrible, though. (It defeats the human visual system's attempts to recognize objects by silhouettes, which is why so many people take so long to find the icon they are lo

As a professional game designer of 16 years, I disagree. The designers of these games are not following the traditional idea of game design wherein you are trying to make something fun or interesting. They are deliberately trying to engin

ARticle looks completely fake? Picture looks Photoshopped, no actual non-generic humans referenced in the text? Link bait? Why is this here?

I agree that it is sort of good-natured rivalry, but it sort of isn't. I went to Berkeley and know that it is true.

Thanks for noticing! Some posters here have very weird perspectives. Yes, if someone wants to extrapolate some straw man, based not on statements in the article or evidence from the real world, but built from whatever feels easy to critici

Why is this on HN? The author of this article does not know anything about the game industry. The reason most developers of $60 games sign with publishers is because they do not have the money to develop games of that size themselves. Whet

I am looking to move my company's office and wanted a good way to search for places, so I went to 42Floors's site this morning. I found a couple of reasonable offices on the map, clicked on one, filled out their few things the site wanted,

Greg Egan has written a couple of less-jokey stories that deal with a related idea (that is more plausible). The first story is "Luminous" from 1995, but I don't have a link to a free copy. The second is "Dark Integers" which you can find h

Sure. But if you expect that everyone should engage in mediocre speech, just because you don't know whether you should respect them or not, the result is kind of a sucky world.

Wait, what? Is there no such thing as someone who has enough experience that they are allowed to speak directly and clearly about an issue? Rather, you think people are supposed to be all mealy-mouthed so that you don't feel like they are

I am referring to Justice Potter Stewart's famous 1964 opinion statement in a Supreme Court case on pornography. Look up "I know it when I see it" on Wikipedia.

I have been having similar lamentations recently. One obvious example: the San Francisco Bay Bridge. The original bridge was built in 1933; it took them less than 3.5 years to build it. Now, they are just trying to replace the eastern span
