This article seems naive. Probably people are being paid to rate apps down.

Indeed, such a lousy article. The stock is still net up almost 50% in THREE MONTHS and yet somehow he is writing some doomsday scenario article about it. It reminds me of the crappy articles talking about how TSLA was down and doing terribl

It is not that meditating disables anything; rather, meditation consists in observing consciousness in a way that is orthogonal to these things. When meditating, sometimes (often!) you are remembering things, but sometimes you aren't.

I am glad this paper has been written, but already by page 3 there are serious problems with it. For example: It is an easily observable phenomenon (e.g. by anyone who meditates) that you can be conscious without remembering anything. In ot

The scary thing is how proud they are of their system; it has a cute name and everything. If the person who CTO'd that worked for me, they would not be CTO any more.

These guys never heard of shared memory, apparently? Does Ruby not provide a facility to use shared memory? I guess you don't get it by default in a GC'd language because the GC thinks it owns the world.

Of course not, but look: you manage the investment arm of a charity fund and your job is to provide more income for that fund in the future. If you put money into stocks, and get a return on that, that return means very concrete things: mor

It is the other way around. If you are doing effective altruism, you want to make sure you have money coming in that you can be altruistic with. The bit about Walmart was especially badly done. If the author of this article thinks Walmart e

Not a carefully-written article. When you buy stock in a public company, that company is not getting your money -- the seller of the stock is! So if you buy a Pepsi stock or a Shell stock, you are investing in that stock, but not investing

Left to its own devices, a baby will stick pretty much everything into its mouth. If you believe that evolution generates behavior to maximize survival value, this fact about babies seems relevant.

... And what about the actual action of double-tapping? On some pages it zooms, and on some pages it does nothing, and in fact the first tap fires off a link. How is that simple, predictable, or solid-feeling? It isn't.

Not true. I am talking specifically about interaction response, not the rate of animation display. It is about your brain learning responses to its actions so that it can better plan its actions. That cannot happen when the responses are se

I don't think "we haven't seen confusion around this" is a good answer. Most users will not even understand what is happening, they will just have an ambient level of uncomfortability with the UI that they don't kno

The impact of variable latency is well-known among people who actually study human factors. It makes it hard for your brain to internalize interactions and make them automatic, and it increases the feeling of frustration. In video games spe

I agree that latency is terrible, but this is bad design that actually makes the situation worse. Now instead of a constant, learnable latency, you have latency that varies wildly depending on what page you are on. This is the wrong solutio
