No software is perfect. However, for H.264 (x264? sigh) decoding VLC 2.x with multi-threaded decoding should eat all the files without issues (no reports so far).

Yes, a lot of them. VLC contributions have mainly been done by 2 dozens of persons. If any of Rémi Denis-Courmont, Laurent Aimar, Gildas Bazin, Pierre d'Herbemont, Rafaël Carré (or me) would have disagreed, I would have stopped right away.

Rémi Denis-Courmont is the biggest contributor of VLC, so far, and he pushed forward the LGPL move... :)

The main reason, is that VLC is too mainstream... For people who want to spend hours to configure their system, MPC-HC with madVR can give better upscaling and foobar gives better audio fidelity. Most of the rest is usual rants from issues

Subtitles rendering of VLC 2.0.x is quite high quality, since the video output changes of 2.0. Audio pausing is fixed since a long time on all platforms and on development version for Windows. Seeking on H.264 and MKV ordered chapters issue

This is resolved in development version, and for half of them in 2.0.4.

2 authors out of 230 is not that much... And for example, the author of headphone objected only on Headphone and Dolby, but allowed the rest of his code to be changed.

Part 3 is coming soon, about FAQ and numbers, but part2 is probably the most interesting one, indeed.

Possibly, yes. But so far, iOS aout and vout are not LGPL.

This is my website :) (I did not expect that to come on HN, to be honest) Anyway, the title is, of course, misleading. VLC core, named libVLCcore is LGPL since last year (I did it too in december) and the wrapper for 3rd party applications

But then, it would miss the joke... All caca labs projects are of the same kind: libcaca, libpipi, toilet, etc...

And yet, I do not see how a media player can do anything about it.

Yes, we are trying to fix this, by proving it correctly, but cheap people like HP are trying to screw users with that.

Good catch. :) (of course, this is HN) Mosaic is using VLM, but VLC's main playlist does not use it :)

This is, of course, nonsense. This is software amplification, so at worse, you clip everything. It's like saying that you should not listen to metal or experimental music because it is more saturated and might destroy your speakers. The sof

Still no Native code options? No thank you... Javascript is great for many applications, but multimedia and games are not in this case. Moreover, I don't see what Firefox OS brings that Android cannot do...

Well, outputting video and audio should not be too hard to adapt (almost work out of the box). Decoding does not do system calls, except for hardware decoding, so no worry. File input is worrying because of the sandbox, but should be doable

Well, there are a few good reasons for that: coding for WinRT is harder than it should be, and the developers are not fans of the WinRT UI (so they don't use it). I am in this very situation, with an app with has dozens of millions of users

I have been using the Ux31 (previous version, only 1600x900) on Arch and Windows 8, and I am quite impressed too. I have been a heavy Thinkpad (T42 and T61p) and Macbook Pro user, and I had the chance to test other Ultrabooks, like the Sams
