First you need to distinguish between the ones that just give you some kind of blob api (HDFS, mogilefs, whatever sector/sphere's FS component is), and mostly-posix-compliant ones (glusterfs, ceph, etc). http://pl.atyp.us/wordpress/?p=2662

Superficially at least it sounds a lot like what you'd get if you added SSDs to Oracle's Exadata.

This makes me think that it's a shame we'll never have a modern equivalent of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, because nothing new will ever enter the public domain after the 1998 copyright act.

Partly that's because while US personal taxes are middle-of-the-pack-ish, their corporate tax rate of 35% is behind only Japan: http://alhambrainvestments.com/blog/2009/01/29/corporate-tax... (And partly it's because there's a lot more th

Bingo. I spoke with an entrepreneur at PyCon who started his company in Singapore, not only because of the IRS, but because Singapore is happy to give a visa to anyone in the world he wants to hire.

I switched from a Dell Studio XPS running Windows 7 to a new mbp running OS X 10.6 a month ago, and the mbp is noticeably less stable -- I have to reboot every few days to avoid Spinny Wheel Of Hell for no apparent reason. (I prefer linux t

I've failed to get offers when I've been up front and said, "I'll leave in two years if I'm not challenged anymore." And that's okay, because it probably wasn't a good fit.

One of my bosses told me, "People who have been at their current company for more than four years probably do not have enough thirst for challenge to be a good fit at a startup." That seemed to work for him. And I think Mark Suster has had

They're hoping that the free publicity attracting _good_ developers who otherwise wouldn't have heard about Redgate, will outweigh having to sift through some extra chaff.

I get about 4h on my 10-days-old mbp battery, fwiw. Apple's benchmarks are as unrealistically optimistic as everyone else's. (I complained about this to a long-time mac user, and he said "You're probably using it with the display on.")

Dell Studio XPS or HP Envy line are good alternatives, depending on what you need. Both are available with higher-res screens and faster (quad core i7) cpus than the mbp, for instance. The major caveats on the Envy are that it has serious,
