Conspiracy theory inbound: The size of the battery is precisely tuned such that after two years of degradation, it lasts less than a day (~16 hours), so people are driven to upgrade. All thickness "improvements" are incidental.

It's kind of a pain, but you can use buildFHSUserEnv [0] to run a custom binary. If memory serves, this also works by writing the config for buildFHSUserEnv in a .nix file, running it with nix-shell, and then running the desired binary

I've used talloc [1] where appropriate to greatly simplify memory allocation and string handling. [1] https://talloc.samba.org/talloc/doc/html/index.html

It's funny, I have a similar story: my mother bought me a leather belt as a child around 1995. It finally bit the dust a few years ago. I bought a belt from the same company (Land's End) and it barely lasted a year. Then my aunt g

In many cases, due to Rust's move semantics, the previous value is consumed anyway. Imagine a function that takes and consumes a Point by value and returns a new, modified Point (assume we're talking about a struct without the Cop

The key value in minor, based on my understanding, is that it's unsafe for a package manager to automatically downgrade a package that was developed against a particular minor version because that would constitute removed functionality

If your Android phone supports USB-C, there's another alternative: you can embed your TOTP tokens on a Yubikey and access it via USB-C and the Yubico Authenticator on F-Droid: https://f-droid.org/en/packages/c

Not what the OP asked, but: Initially, I really wanted to use Guix over Nix, but Nix is more mature with more packages, maintainers, and features. Last I checked, for example, there was no equivalent of a channel or overlay in Guix. Their n

There is a `/bin/sh` and `/usr/bin/env` provided - so you can use `/usr/bin/env bash`. There is also this function which may be necessary for certain software: https://nixos.org/nixpkg

Brings a bunch of fixes to building Rust packages, and it can even be used with the Rust nightly from the Mozilla nixpkgs overlay like this: let defaultPkgs = import <nixpkgs> {}; defaultRust = defaultPkgs.latest.rustChann

IIRC the tooling is not smart enough to resolve them when you import a subpackage directly. I was working on a go project and I had to convert all of the relative imports to absolute imports for some reason, but the exact cause escapes my m

Part of is is probably because subfolders are subpackages and relative imports don't work and absolute imports have other issues - like causing issues with forking.

I'm kind of surprised no one has tried to make a standard library for node - although I guess underscore/lodash come close. The package situation is a serious problem for distro maintainers, which AFAICT have basically given up pa

Looks like it's possible to have a "Lesser" AGPL. libbitcoin[1] uses such a license. Also licensing things under a dual AGPL/commercial license seems perfect for things like databases. Mongo uses it IIRC. [1] https:

Go from the very beginning has irritated me, for these reasons and more. There is already a lot of Rust love around here, but I would recommend giving it a chance over Go.

We already have an issue with business consolidation in the US and the decline of small businesses, I would be wary about anything that might contribute to it, as an inheritance tax might.

If you use a content-addressable scheme (fetchurl with sha256, for example), it will retain the source archives until you run garbage collect. If you use builtins.fetchTarball, I don't think this is the case. Since this all uses CAS, y
