I'd agree with this suggestion. Furthermore this does not need a new number format, as IEEE floating point is already pretty ideally distributed. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Logit

Misumi is awesome. It's basically Japan's answer to McMaster-carr. 10 years ago I would have said Misumi's website was better than MMC. Unfortunately Misumi has gotten a bit less usable over the past decade, while McMaster ha

What metric do you prefer? Or, what metric should a Vancouverite use to judge whether they'd struggle less to afford housing in Tokyo, given an opportunity to move there? And, reciprocally, what would you tell a Tokyoite who is conside

It seems very relevant to me! The median multiple is most directly relevant to people earning the median salary and buying the median house. And by this metric Tokyo blows Vancouver out of the park. Even if they're working a job making

Generally, it would be people coming from anywhere with a higher median multiple than Tokyo. (That is, ratio of median housing price to median household income). For example Vancouver, with a median multiple of 11.9 (in 2019) will have a lo

Generous loans increase buying power and, in the absence of elastic supply, would result in rising prices that keep housing expensive. The wonder is that you can buy a new construction 3-story 3 bed/2 bath house 5 minutes from Sugamo s

Good points. I wonder to what extent the Japanese real estate bubble pop of 1992 played a role. Housing in Tokyo was sky-high in 1989, to be sure, despite their zoning rules being enacted in 1968.

Zoning, as the article mentions, is one important element. I think there are others. The excellent transit system, and cultural acceptance of small homes for example.

This was the Graf Zeppelin, probably the most accomplished airship ever built. In addition to this mission, it circumnavigated the Earth in 1929, and offered regular passenger service between Europe and Brazil through the 1930s.

If you have a sufficiently powerful laser, you can create a spark that floats in mid-air. The air at the focal point gets ionized by the strong electric fields and looks quite dazzling (and dangerous). That spark, in turn, can be moved arou

You more or less described it. If you put a microlens over, say, each 3x3 pixel sub-array, then each of those 3x3 squares now captures a locally incident light ray and its direction (with low resolution). You can now treat that as a single

That's true, but it might be mainly a cost issue. You can make up for the resolution loss by using a much larger sensor; since the microlenses are very thin, it won't increase the weight or bulk of the device very much. Just the c
