If you wanted to read an article about Pinterest, it would probably be hard to search for it in any other way.

5 years is plenty of time for patenting some clever software trick that took a minute to think up and a week to implement (eg. minigames in loading screens). But some inventions take years or even decades of research (eg in materials scienc

How common is it across species that males are larger? It's definitely not universal.

This is great, but I wish there were a broader library that went beyond special functions. For example, last year I was doing some statistical modelling and ended up with a complicated integral that yielded to analysis much more easily than

Yes, this must be it. Real-world UI design aims to be as easily understandable and usable as possible, even if it falls short. In movies, they want to convey that the hackers/astronauts/super heros have deep expertise. It would be

I see this all the time now. My Kitchenaid kettle has a similar "designed in X" note on it. To me that kind of messaging just exudes arrogance.

Some time around 2009 I met Enrique, the author of Skeinforge, a popular and extremely feature-rich software suite for slicing 3D models into 3D printer G-code. He said his dream wanted to someday 3D print a boat. I thought that was far-fet

It's certainly one of the reasons. (There are also others, like building a good reputation to help attract and retain talent). For example, in 2009, in the world of physics engines, Havok (acquired by Intel) and PhysX (owned by Nvidia)

Perhaps, but once you've been falsely accused of something and have no alibi to clear your name, it will probably reshape for the rest of your life how you make decisions on such evidence.

It would be nice if you could just pay the government a percentage of the shares themselves as a tax, rather than a percentage of a guessed-at illiquid value. I'm sure the government would have a lot more paperwork to do holding onto a

That's a very interesting proposal, but I wonder how it would work out in practice. As all eggs have one X chromosome, that effectively creates a system three sexes: Female, Male (X-gamete predisposition) and Male (Y-gamete predisposit

That seems backwards to me. The entropy should be relative to how the password is guessed, not how it was generated. It doesn't make any difference to the attacker if I pick "bluecheese" out of a dictionary or as a result of

When I visited Japan I was astounded by the high price for animation. I naively expected that buying from the source would be cheaper but... think 5000~7000 JPY for one DVD disc of a seven disc series. For DVD at least, Japan is region 2 (s
