For those who don't get the chickens vs. bulls reference: "If you were plowing a field, which would you rather use?... Two strong oxen or 1024 chickens?" - Seymour Cray There are a lot of other great Cray quotes.

I think the key is to lower the barriers to creating minimal, working, useful, hopefully interesting programs as much as possible. E.g., start with a minimal implementation of the Unix 'wc' command in Python, walk through it explaining how

I studied CS at the University of Toronto in the early 90's and in hindsight I'm amazed that we never formally taught how to program. (The one exception I can recall is a "theory of languages" course that gave us a brief exposure to half a

Transferring the H1B to a different company is straightforward. However (and this happened to me) if the original company is sponsoring your green card, you will have to restart the green card application process with your new employer (

Actually, keeping an impending layoff a secret is possible. I was part of a sizable layoff at a medium-sized publicly traded company that was AFAIK a complete surprise to everyone below the director level. Certainly no-one else at my leve

Until we had our son I would have largely agreed with this article, but our local public library has been an incredible resource for board books and kids music CDs for him (now 2 years old). My wife checks out at least a dozen new books an

I can still clearly remember being amazed when I first saw Deluxe Paint running on the Amiga in the late 80's. Poring over the latest edition of Amiga Format became a favourite weekly ritual. Those were the days!
