Are you sure about that? I would say that Linux is in that position because there are similar alternatives (Windows, OS X) that require less technical knowledge for equivalent competency. 3D printers on the other hand have 3 big barriers: 1

I used to love scraping with the Python, BeautifulSoup, Mechanize family and wrote a lot of scripts like the one in this post. I've been using CasperJS[1] though and I don't think I'll go back. [1] - http://casperjs.org/
