If you take into account healthcare, college education and housing costs, all quite low in Finland and completely out of control in the US, your $40K may be not that bad.

Thank you. It is astonishing how few people understand the distinction (public/private).

The government subsidizes housing through: - low interest rates (reduces interest payments) - tax deductions (mortgage interest payments, etc). Low interest rates, in particular, caused prices to rise dramatically, putting a lot of people i

Off-topic, but why is attention from "fat chicks and gays" undesirable? I personally do not discriminate when someone compliments me - it does not necessarily mean they want to have sex with me and even if they do, so what? It is

The government should not be intervening in the market (through bailouts or subsidies) on behalf of an anointed market player (or group of players). It should set the same rules for everybody and enforce them. If someone is not playing by t

Basic research, yes, I agree. But there is not much basic research in electric cars, the tech has been known for many years now, same for space travel.

The government _not_ hand-picking winners and losers (bailouts, lobbyists, etc.) would be a good start.

True, but you excluded housing/food costs. On-campus housing is typically required for the first 2 years. Even off-campus, you have to sleep somewhere and eat. So add another $10K to your number.

Somewhat off-topic, but... Why is sending people into space or making electric cars the job of the government?

Yes, but she had nothing to do with the stock price rising (all due to BABA's rising value). If someone offered me a shitload of money to run a sinking ship, I would have taken the job, just as she did. With this level of compensation,

Ceylon is such an under-rated language. It is what Java should have been - had it been curated better. RedHat should really spend more time/money on spreading the word - a lot of people have not even heard of it.

This. Ceylon is what Java should have evolved into with better stewardship. Too bad it does not have the marketing muscle of a big corporation/consortium.

True, but imagine how many more new Google-like companies VCs could have helped to create if they hadn't spent money on silly "Uber for Pets" start-ups. It almost seems like investing in early stage, but serious companies is

For me, ratings were the most important reason why I used Amazon (plus the convenience of one-stop shopping). This is a major stumble for Amazon, IMO. Hopefully a competitor steps up - this would be good for consumers, Amazon has become to

Thanks for the thoughtful comment. However, I respectfully disagree with the statement "price of oil will of course go back up at some point". I don't think it will ever go back to $80+ for two reasons: - more producers (US,

Well, the market responds to consumers, who say (much to my chagrin): price/quantity over quality. The fact that these consumers spoil things for people like me who would gladly pay more for quality is another topic. But the market wor

Also, when data is stolen, it is simply copied, the "original" remains on your computer - unlike physical items (which disappear when stolen). So it is really hard to notice.

Most people agree that inequality is not a bad thing in itself. But we have two problems with inequality right now: 1. The sheer amplitude of it. Having people whose net worth is equal to the GDP of a small country poses interesting questio
