This reminds me of the Heritage School [1], which teaches people skills such as blacksmithing, knifemaking, working with Damascus steel, and woodworking. I think it's great these skills haven't completely died out. [1] http://www.bc3.edu/h

If you do decide to drop out, keep in mind that without a degree many professional opportunities will be closed off to you. You'll need to work several times harder than degree holders to prove you know your stuff (or are willing to learn).

Sure, Microsoft could have built a skype clone in-house for far less than $8bn. But would people actually sign up and use it - to the tune of 124 million people per month? My guess is no, at least not for several quarters.
