the dark forest requires a relatively simple cheap and effective way of sterilizing a stat system. if there is an easy way to do that then a first strike becomes a more reasonable first contract option.

the speed of light mostly irrelevant at that distance, ping time from London to California is about 300 ms. wouldn't be great for gaming but i doubt it would cause issues with a robotic surgery.

the US Midwest has a ton of wind power, if you drive through there you have a decent chance of seeing a truck carrying a blade. pretty interesting stuff. obviously those are a lot smaller than this windmill though.

I think sapience would be a better word than sentience. But with regards to the process talking to the crew I think the book explicitly said that it didn't have any sort of comprehension of what it was saying. I belive the Chinese room

gotta love how many conspiracy theories required an absolutely absurd amount of people to be in on it with no real tangible benefit.

it would change the methods we have to use. cutting carbon emissions wouldn't do anything substantial if it's not man made. in that case I think we'd need to use geoengineering to avoid it.

I've read a few scifi stories that involve talking with dolphins, the ringworld series includes them as does revelation space. although they're typically fairly small roles.

the lemmy instance I've looked at is already a terrible echo chamber, as bad as some of the worst parts of reddit. I think defederation is going to lead into more insular communities unfortunately.

normal people who are allowed to fail die doing stupid things all the time. people die climbing or skydiving or any other number of ways. the fact is people are just really bad at risk assessment.
