Yes that is already way too much extra work. And when those versions are not yet available to depend on? libheif, libaom and libraw needs latest versions and be built together.

I disagree, as I have spent way too many hours fighting ancient packages in ubuntu repos at work. Image processing is very difficult when limited to the available versions in ubuntu or Fedora. I do wonder how mastodon or Plex does it. Plex

I run it on a nuc with a cheap 1tb nvme drive and it is fast enough. I have zero RAW photos though.

It is not. What if this app needs python 3.11? How do I guarantee that in the environment for all linux distros?

No it is not. I have never ever touched a RPM, but I want to bundle my app with jdk 20 and opencv 4.5. how do I guarantee that?

I already run «AI» (machine learning) apps on my old NUC… inferencing does not take that much power.

I think its a bigger issue that the next gen NUCs will be good enough to cannibalize the rest of the desktop market. Look at the recent amd offerings and the mac mini with M1. They can replace my destop fully. The only reason I have a deskt

I 100% agree. My goto is «hibernate makes simple things easier and hard things harder». JDBC can be a little bare-bones so I prefer something like JDBI.

I am the same, I love good monitoring. My place has been very focused on it, and we struggle to find time to work on it beyond basic «does it work». Yet We have so much monitoring we are drowning in metrics.

I worked for a place that didnt value solid engineering in this way, and our systems where always so janky and half broken. I dont expect building Spanner, but being able to migrate certain huge tables at all would be nice. But no, they alw

Well, we have about 4B vectors we want to index, with a constantly changing dataset. We are actually running just fine on Elasticsearch with ~1B docs indexed right now, but the hardware costs are looking expensive.

The 2 hour lunches are actually useful once a week. Sitting at your desk is even less a guarantee anyone is working. Its a fools errand to try to micromanage that.

I gave up on running windows because of the difficulty of sharing files with linux. So now I run only Linux. Some kind of native support for btrfs in windows would be great!

I do disagree with this. It is ok I guess to make these convoluted, half-assed products if the cash flow is fine, but remember you will forever future pay a cost here for increased maintenance and for complicating the next feature.

How do we achieve that? Releasing often and in smaller increments. A release causing an outage should be easier to test than the subtle bugs that come creeping one, two, three days later. Either way, if there is a catastrophic failure, its

From my point of view, we get a new project that I think will take 6 weeks because of X, Y Z. Management thinks it should take 2 days, so they say go ahead anyway. The project takes 8 weeks to finish most of the features and doing this effo

I feel the same. Macs are just way too expensive in EU market to recommend for normal people. You can get a real good internet+netflix machine for 800EUR. In my opinion Apple prices themselves out as the quality of the 800EUR market range i
