It looks like the majority of TC is being run through Google Ad Manager with lots of inventory going to them (notice all the google ads). I don't see iSocket's ad script anywhere on their page, maybe they interface to Google Ad Manager?

Maybe they should stop saturday delivery and stop undercutting FedEx and UPS on shipping charges and they might stop losing money. The government only stops them from expanding their business and closing rural branches. Also sell sponsorshi

Is relying on blogging really the reason Fog Creek hasn't crossed over or is it because they write tools that only 5-10% of the programmer audience are interested in?

It appears so. I guess my main point was that MS seems to be trying to do what Apple does (limit hardware, make tough choices), but when you have vendors and partners that strategy is pretty rough on them.

If you read this article [1] (which is where I think the other sites are getting their quotes) then it sounds like its more than just a couple buttons: "There could be more to this than just the sin of having two buttons too many, however:

I knew Windows inside and out, used it from 3.1 and could do just about anything I wanted to do and fix just about any issue. 3 years ago I moved to Mac OS and I am still working on getting myself to the same place.

This shows Microsoft is really trying to follow Apple's playbook here and stick with very strict hardware specifications. Honestly it's probably a smart move, if you don't think the hardware is perfect for the device then don't let users ru

The design of something is the first indicator I use to evaluate how trustworthy a site is. The better the design the more I know that these people put alot of thought into it and spent money and time on it. Now, overly clever stuff is defi

I agree with most of the content of the article but the term passive income always bothers me, running both styles of businesses right now (subscription and ad firm) I can tell you that neither of them feels very passive.

Servers and Bandwidth for a site doing 1 million page views a month should cost at most a couple hundred bucks, maybe $500 if you go overboard. If he is spending $1900 a month on servers that is ridiculous.

The site looks nice and I get the idea, I think the only problem is that I would see this as way to formal with my friends and family. If I pick up dinner with friends, or if I pay his part of the cab fare.. he just buys me dinner or a beer

I don't know why they don't just move these off to their own section, like NC-17 rated section and make it so they don't show up in the charts. The room at the back of the movie store has worked for decades and seems like a perfect strategy

That's the most interesting piece to me, they slipped in that basically everyone who was using Ad Manager for 90M+ now has to pay. As someone who is working on a for-pay ad server this is good news.

If you have something with a fairly simple architecture then I would stick with Heroku or Slicehost, they are both very affordable. If you need more flexibility I would go with EC2 (or EC2 through Engine Yards Cloud stuff)

There is plenty of information out there from great companies who are making money from day 1 while providing value, it seems like it's pretty damn simple actually. Create a product that does something useful, charge people for it.

That's quite a leap you made there, the businesses I run have been profitable from day 1 and also provide value to people. Making money is one of the best ways to know that are providing value, if people will pay for your app on a monthly b

When did "build something people want" turn into making money at any cost? This is the 2nd or 3rd highly voted article about ways to make money without building a startup that provides meaningful value to it's users.

Yeah, the people who created the owl videos are providing value, youtube is providing value by making them available, the owl site is just leaching off of that to make a buck.
