I believe so too. To choose an efficient algorithm, you have to know things about the input data. Even with the sorting example, this is so; e.g. if you place a certain set of constraints on the input, its possible to sort in linear time. B

Are you trying to reinvent prolog? Also, I don't really understand how a compiler for your language would actually figure out the efficient algorithms for getting the answer. EDIT: I see there's already a bunch of people talking about pro

Not to mention that the quality of the majority of content produced by these industries sucks.

They need to shut the hell up and work on improving their content distribution model. Learn something from Gabe Newell already. Sheesh.

and by "algorithmic processing" I mean detecting when the video contains a pirated song, for example.

Maybe, but this won't do when you actually have to do algorithmic processing of the video (which I think Youtube does after all).

I doubt that the parts of YouTube responsible for video-related heavy-lifting (transcoding, detecting copyright infringement, etc.) are written in a dynamic language like Python, Ruby or PHP or even a managed language like Java.

One may consider using FastCGI to avoid the costs associated with starting a new process with each request.

I have a nice alternative to suicide. Since you hate your life so much that you want to end it, why not just say "fuck it all" and go start a new life from scratch by having some crazy (and possibly dangerous) adventure?

Depends on the project you're contributing to. True, there are projects that are more reluctant to accept "outsider" contributions, but I doubt that if you come up with a viable solution to a real problem, you will be ignored.

It's really easy, if you use open source software on a daily basis. There will always be something you'd like to improve about it and personal interest is the best motivation.

Amen to that. Maybe when more people start switching to a desktop environment that is not completely braindead, the Ubuntu team will understand that they are doing something seriously wrong.

It's somewhat the other way around for me: I got to study logic, discrete math, functional programming and OO, but I feel I missed out on stuff like electronics.

One good reason is that by writing algorithms and data structures in C, you can see them in all the detail, see how the memory is laid out and how it's managed, and understand their costs and benefits. I used ANSI C to implement most of the

Think from the point of view of someone who does not have as much experience as you do. Plus, not all universities cover everything that is in that book. For example, we studied logic and elements of computability theory, but we were never

I firmly believe that every programmer should be able to read and write C to some extent, and to learn it one must read K&R. So, yes, I agree that it is also one of the books that every programmer should read.

Any decent C programmer should know this stuff. Also, > size_t offset = (size_t) &(((struct s*)0)->thing); In what universe is that code "ugly"?
