The world's most successful open source developer didn't converge on that communication style for no reason. I don't think I've seen a single person bring up the classism inherent in dictating gentlemanly manners. Part o

The more this kind of thing happens, the more it's going to blow back on you. The hacks, ideologues, and frauds have done a lot to destroy trust in science and the image of science. When the public backlash comes, muggles aren't g

I've only been lucky enough to find one opportunity in my entire twenty-seven year career to write something novel and new. Most of the time we're reinventing the wheel. What separates the winners from the losers is whether or n

Most people aren't hackers. Thanks to LLMs and vibe coding, even they can now take a can-do attitude to life that feels empowering. There's no longer any excuse to languish in helpless misery and negativity. You can just build thi

It's important to understand that functions like execve(), which are used to spawn processes, are upstream dependencies of dynamic memory functions like malloc(). It's hairy to have low-level functions in your system depend on oth

There's always a limit. People only complain when it actually limits them. Most open source people have never needed to glob tens of thousands of files. If you want to feel better, POSIX says the minimum permissible ARG_MAX is 4096, an

It can. Just set RLIMIT_STACK to something huge. Distros set it at 8mb by default. Take it up with them if you want the default to change for everyone.

Focus on building and don't worry about being in regulatory crosshairs until you're actually in their crosshairs. The less you know about this stuff the better.

8.8 percent of Firefox users have 32-bit systems. It's probably mostly people with a 32-bit install of Windows 7 rather than people who actually have an old 32-bit Intel chip like Prescott. Intel also sold 32-bit chips like Intel Quark

Just increase your RLIMIT_STACK value. It can easily be tuned down e.g. `ulimit -s 4000` for a 4mb stack. But to make it bigger you might have to change a file like /etc/security/limits.conf and then log out and back in.

NASA ended their space shuttle program in 2011 and hasn't been able to send things into space since. For the rest of that decade, the only way Americans could access ISS was by purchasing tickets on Russian spacecraft. NASA pivoted to

Putting aside the people who need LLMs as a prosthetic, the only writers who are asking AI to write lengthy prose for them are the ones who on that occasion didn't have anything important to say in the first place. Maybe they work a fa
