Thats what Kickstarter is for. I'm sure we can get a bunch of us to pledge some money to pay for data recovery.

I'm on Chrome and it worked fine. Took a while to connect to the server, but other than that, it works great.

Why not use Kickstarter for this? Is there something about Kickstarter that makes it necessary to have a separate site for science? It seems that the audience that uses Kickstarter is the one you want for Petridish.

That's not quite right. Rackspace currently uses the Xen Hypervisor for public Cloud, not VMWare. The new Cloud Servers (Nova) is based on the open source OpenStack Compute ( http://openstack.org/projects/compute/ ) code base. The new Cloud

I think you may be a little off here. The statements in the thread seem to indicate that the compromise was not based on a vulnerability in custom software, but compromised credentials. You can certainly argue that the management console sh

An interesting argument and a straw-man argument. Let's deal with the straw man first. Just because you have no use for the extra speed doesn't mean others do not. In addition, systems / uses for the speed will only be built when the number

This seems to be the MO for this particular site. There is a blog post calling out someone's faults (privacy, security, etc), some basic misinformation and a plug for his service as being better. I don't mind him wanted to do PR, but it doe

This seems like a neat accomplishment, but why would I use it? There is mountains of work for standard configurations including security hardening, monitoring, configuration management, etc. What about this product makes it better than the

One of the issues that I noticed isn't mentioned is that Cloud servers with Windows are generally more expensive. For example, at Rackspace a 4GB Linux server is $175 / month while a 4GB Windows server is $233. You could use Azure, but then

You say that like it is some force of nature. Movies don't have to be expensive to make and Ebert specifically called out that the bright spot for 2011 was independent films. You are correct about branding, but the movie studios decided to

JSON lends itself pretty well to compression as well so a binary format might not buy you as much as you think.

At least for FI, all users count towards your user cap. I've asked about this before because it really sucks. For 100 projects we might have 200+ users that don't really need access, but could use it. Since the prices don't get better at th

Is it just me or is the first example on their front page a great example of XSS? Unless their standard string formatting routines are performing escaping, this is pretty awful.

Looks like www.rackspace.com is IPv6 now. I can't route to it since I'm on TimeWarner, but it seems to have a AAAA record.

There are people moving towards an open source implementation of high scalability cloud services. For example, the OpenStack project at http://www.openstack.org . The main pieces were contributed by Rackspace and NASA, but dozens of other

This is my question. 300 milliseconds is nice, but once you add HTTP overhead, then TLS overhead, it will be almost impossible for your site to respond to YOUR user in less than a second or two. We'll see in 2011 I guess.

Woot had these on sale and I picked one up. I've used it several times, including some of the more spectacular storms that we get here in Texas and it works as advertised. I also appreciate that the long tail design covers my backpack which
