I like what Dwolla is doing, but unfortunately without a faster way to move money out of Dwolla (transfer to PayPal, debit card, etc.) it's pretty useless for me right now. The devs have told me that's completely against all they stand for,

I guess it would depend on how "production" the app is, but I don't know if I would automatically call not handling that edge case incompetence.

I think friend lists are part of their basic permission set precisely because it's one of the most appealing parts of the Facebook API. Offline access isn't needed on the majority of sites that ask for it though, it's usually just lazines

This is a pretty good bite-size sampling of the workings of some of the nice things we take for granted in Rails (like AREL). Rspec is another one that's worth looking into: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/3105755/ruby-metaprogramm...

This is a lot like the 37signals model of consulting: "sell your soul" to clients until you can afford to take a leap on your own product.

What about doing the same thing, but fuzzing a few pixels from each edge to avoid pixel distance matching? You could even make the edges just plain black for a few pixels from each edge. The human eye would be able to complete the image (it

If you're trying to imply that I "stole" the comment, I posted it in the article comments after posting it here (note the usernames). Figured it might spark some discussion for people not coming from HN.

Speaking of CAPTCHAs, a smaller version of this would make an excellent one. Er, well maybe not, given the ease of programmatic solutions.

To me, the scariest thing (which seems to be overlooked) is that this particular strain of Avian Flu is only 5 mutations away from the Avian Flu in the wild. While we're fretting about whether this will get out of a lab, it's not entirely u

I can imagine it now, this is the first step in human evolutionary divergence between the Eloi (programmers) and the Morlocks (Mechanical Turkers).

Well, Steve Jobs was pretty famous for that too. Don't get me wrong, I'm just as much of a Steve Jobs admirer as the next guy, but from what I've read he did shame a lot of people at Apple.

It's probably more fair to say that the HTML spec is getting closer to what is possible with Flex. Browser support is a whole different issue.

Flex isn't THAT bad. It's actually pretty nice when combined with an MVC framework like Mate (SCREW Cairngorm) for developing desktop apps with AIR. Of course, it takes quite a while to read through the documentation for the INSANE number o

Wow, this is incredible. Assuming it isn't crazy expensive, I'd put this on everything from my car to my walls. I do kind of wonder how you'd wash clothes coated in this, though. It would be kind of tricky if dirt can get into the fibers bu

I don't want to rain on anyone's parade here, but sheet metal and tin snips are pretty cheap at Home Depot. If they weren't $10.00-12.50 each I could see ordering a pack.

It's easy to say that, but when you're being interviewed by mainstream media it's very easy to get a "deer in the headlights" feeling and just hyperfocus on the interviewer. If you get nervous, the adrenaline can really hamper your brain-mo

I think he's hit on a very good point: Many minorities are not pushed from a young age to excel in areas that are useful in tech startups. There is definitely progress being made in that direction, but it's probably going to take a decade t
