I'm currently a postdoc in Germany, to be honest, it seems that only people who can't find a job in the industry are staying in academia. I've never met a postdoc who was happy about what they are doing, everyone one is think

Yeah, it feels like most fields are stagnated except for biology and neuroscience. I am a postdoc right now but have considered seriously switching fields to work on something exciting.

Similar to the law of total expectation, easier for me to think of partitioning a weighted mean :)

Having experienced both, I think individualism brings more freedom and independence which is crucial for some/most people. The cost is losing this tribal connection that gives you some sense of belonging and safety which fulfills the ur

During the pandemic many stores in Germany left all the carts unlocked and it seems that some of them didn't go back to the old system. So probably they've realized it's a silly thing to do and maybe it actually bring more cu

That's how I feel now at my first post doc. I feel frustrated and bored already with no real mentorship or any prospect of growth. I'm really eager to be in a place where people love what they do and continuously be challenged. Th

Judging from the number of people I know IRL who read HN which is exactly zero, I would say it's niche.

Bad caps was a very common problem in the old days, I remember I replaced the ones on my motherboard at least twice. The classical symptom was that heating the motherboard will allow the PC to start.

Okular is my daily driver, I configured minimal vim keybindings and easy shortcuts for review tools which really enhanced my productivity. The configuration is also easily portable. Over the years, I build my own conventions for highlightin

I'm kind of in a similar situation, but instead of working I did a PhD in a field a bit far from computer science and eventually realized academia is not a place I want to stay in. Right now I'm thinking how to do the transition.

I made a lot of friends on IRC and internet forums a long time ago. It is much easier when you are anonymous and be truly yourself. I miss these communities nowadays and can't really find a replacement.

I do it all the time or just move the page slightly if I'm reading a PDF. Don't know why but some who it helps makes reading quicker

I think there are actually many advantages to doing a PhD at an older age. Especially after having a fairly long work experience and if you can bring that to another field say Biology.

Excellent article, aggregation can also obfuscate problems with sensors (for example, weird quantization or duplicating points). It is useful whenever you have high frequency time series to look at the data points for the highest resolution

Indeed, data.table is just awesome for productivity. When you're manipulating data for exploration you want the least number of keystrokes to bring an idea to life and data.table gives you that.

I don't see how it can be pretentious. Usually, I do it to avoid disturbing the flow of text reading.

Like others have pointed out, It's really difficult to operate on a different schedule than the rest of society. Eventually family, friends, and other activities pushed me to give up my evening "first sleep"

Smart is a very vague criterion. What you need is people curios and intelligent enough to be able to do independent research and It's very difficult to judge whether someone would be a good scientist before trying them with real PhD wo

I thought about doing the same for my T430 but found out it'll cost me ~400$ and several hours so I ended up buying a second hand t470s for 300$. I like my T430 but it is really heavy and bulky and the display quality is awful (really

I'm familiar with the type of people you're describing, they are curios and creative and constantly looking for ways to improve things, these people are very rare (particularly in academia?) and really not easy to find. I don'

Aren't modern notebooks a form of Knuth's style literate programming, are there any differences? True, they are more mainstream in analytics where there's a need to explain concepts/results more than the logic of the cod

Essentially higher frequencies are represented using fewer number of shades and many of them will go to zero. Not only due to human cortex but also that there are not much information at high frequency region most images.

That's interesting, I'm a bit confused, in this case high frequencies are not removed they are just quantized like all other frequencies. How is this reconciled with the assumption that high frequencies carry little information?

This offer a more elaborate analysis in the original paper [1] which seems much more interesting than the article. And BTW, they mention they did not receive any funding :) [1] https://arxiv.org/abs/1910.13385
