Then the unfortunate reality is that they might get flamed—sorry, receive a hostile and extremely harsh response—for it.

Thanks for the information! Is there data on the magnetic strip that wouldn't be provided in a card-not-present transaction, or do the processors take the machines' word that the card was present?

I am assuming at the volume in question they'll just retrofit whatever software to use the card readers Starbucks currently uses. They're pretty well built.

Android Starbucks app "card" payment was just rolled out to Canada and the UK last month - I doubt it'll go anywhere for a while for these locales. It might be interesting to see if any payment technology roll-outs beyond US/UK/Canada go wi

I might be wrong but I am under the impression Starbucks runs their transactions as card not present, at least in Canada and I'd suspect also the U.S. This allows them to swipe-and-done a credit card without requiring a signature or chip ve

With the app, you don't have to carry the Starbucks card with you. Not a huge deal but some people will enjoy one less card. With just the credit card, you don't get rewards.

Yeah but both Hondas and Kias can drive on almost any road. That's not the case with Discover acceptance, though I understand it's a lot higher in the U.S. High cash back is a fair enough reason, thanks.

Not to mention the front page colour bar for languages with labels appearing after rolling over has some pretty serious discoverability and accessibility issues.

Before you go off about ethnic and class privilege, you did read the article and note that cash is accepted, right?

Hm... this isn't very scientific, but I've read through a bunch of Wikipedia articles on the topic and nothing says explicitly this will be possible. Everything appears to be written under the assumption that a physical check exists to begi

Other than a bank or cheque cashing service, anyway... The niche seems pretty small: payments too large for cash, too small for certified bank drafts, to people taking too few payments to have technologying up make sense.

I'd argue the fact YC is an American incubator also has a lot to do with who YC companies target. A lot of internet VC-backed startups don't particularly depend on their users spending money.

What kind of efficiency are you discussing? What are you comparing? Roaming driverless taxis are not more energy efficient and they are not more space efficient than transit. Being an improvement on human-driven cars is not a particularly d
