I had the pleasure of sitting across from Carl and asking him questions about how to approach issues relating to open access for a project I was working on. I still draw energy and motivation from listening to him for 10 minutes, years ago.

If you're running a project with a database, you need to take into account the cost of a Hobby dyno and a database add-on. I believe the cheapest Heroku Postgres plan is $9/mo. So, if you had a light-traffic, or demo, or staging p

You are correct about the Tartine method. Skipping that step was one of the first customizations I made to their process, and I haven’t noticed any difference.

A Random Walk Down Wall Street was one of the original books that laid out the case for index funds over picking stocks to build a portfolio. It's been in print for decades. It's not prescriptive, but the baseline of information i

The Alpinist If you enjoyed Free Solo, you really should check out The Alpinist. It's a documentary about Marc-André Leclerc; Alex Honnold thinks of Marc-André the way most of us think about Alex Honnold.

War Games is old, but it's definitely a worthwhile film to watch. I watched it with my 10yo during lockdown times, and it held up pretty well. It's also a good film to watch to put some of the movies that followed it in perspectiv

That is helpful at times. There are some developers whose opinions I know and respect, and it's helpful to see what projects are catching their attention.

I haven't seen anything to indicate there will be anything cheaper than $7. But if you need a data store, and who doesn't with a service that uses Heroku, I think you'll have to pay for that as well. For example, the cheapest

Can anyone clarify what the minimum cost of say, a demo Django project would be now? I come up with $16/month, using a $7 dyno and a $9 postgres instance. Is that accurate? Also, if you're testing the deployment process, what'

I use a non-backlit Keychron K8 TKL during the day, and a simple white backlit Keychron K2 at night (or on really cloudy days). Once I started using wireless keyboards, I couldn't go back to wired.

In sea kayaking you're usually going longer distances, so being able to get into a steady efficient rhythm is important. Quick maneuverability is important, but it's not the highest priority. Wind also comes up a lot in sea kayaki

I ended up building out a hierarchy as well. But figuring out the structure of that hierarchy was not trivial at all. How does the name of a repeatable class (Algebra 1) fit with the name of a specific class (Algebra 1 Fall 2020 Section 2)?
