Rust is actually a contender in this space as well [0]. It is not something that is widely touted, maybe because of a fear that an FP-label would give rust an academic tinge? This is one of the reasons I will dedicate this year's adven

Tools for combining the interactive work in notebooks with a more predictable linear flow are starting to mature. See for instance jupytext [1]: a bi-directional converter between jupyter notebooks and python/R/julia/... I b

If you are into big history science fiction, I highly recommend "The Wandering Earth"[1] by Liu Cixin, which explores this theme (sort of). Short enough to read in a night. [1]: https://www.goodreads.com/book/

This! Still have fond memories of reverse-engineering the screen-buffer encoding on my Amstrad CPC 464 by poking values directly into the buffer and watching what happened on the display (i.e. my TV). Somehow got hold of the Z80 datasheet f

As an atomic physicist, it is great to see clever atomic physics experiments opening up new fields in high-energy physics. The team has been working incredibly hard for this: Jeff Hangst who leads the experiment was already working on this

This. I have made it a rule to always use the bike when going around town. With kids and family, this is pretty much all the exercise I get, but it's enough that I haven't gained any weight from 8 years of free food at the office.

Just the opposite here: I'm in my 40's and work as tech lead on a multi-discipline team. Although I manage to keep my code time up close to 50 percent, most of the really challenging stuff is systems level design/architecture

For quantum physics, you have to try "Quantum Moves" which is a citizen science project studying optimal control for a particle wave packet. The preliminary results were recently published in nature ( http://www.nature.c

This one goes to 11! Seriously, the Brotli quality setting goes to eleven -- pure genius. http://www.gstatic.com/b/brotlidocs/brotli-2015-09-22.pdf (Fig. 1)
