They may be able to ignore the GDPR, but they can't ignore the VAT requirement. The problem is, VAT gives them constructive knowledge about who is in the EU and who isn't.

This is horrible advice. If you don't check input for correctness at all, an attacker could inject all kinds of nastyness into am underlying system, which may expose bugs. For example, control characters, line breaks, shell escape char
