I think it was more hampered by the default viewer program operating like EMACS, which if you're a regular EMACS user is great if you're not it is not terribly ergonomic. What was the command to find the next search item? Ctrl-X

Here is the abstract if you can't load the page normally: A recent meta-analysis in this journal (Taylor et al 2025) produced ostensible evidence of a negative correlation between fluoride exposure and intelligence in children, which g

As noted there are already HTML versions of the manpages that work without apparent issue. It makes me think about having the documentation converted to html and then have a thin script that invokes w3m on the correct file. Then again GNU

The scriptwriters aren't managing the network flows across the backend of their infrastructure. Netflix's trouble with scripts doesn't affect their ability to move bits around.

When a measure becomes a target it is no longer a good measure. These ML benchmarks were never going to last very long. There is far too much pressure to game them, even unintentionally.

You still get guide data if you hook up an Ethernet jack and let it download data online. You need a USB Ethernet adapter, but even a cheap one is fine. I remember there was even a slot (I think it was PCI electrically?) on the gen 1 TiVos

One of the few upsides of Crypto is that it provides a constant reminder of why we have banking regulations. Anytime says regulations are onerous or slow down the process and are outdated you can point to our current day poorly regulated c

I bet it would be outrageously expensive to replace. Escalators aren't cheap to begin with and this one is no doubt built to its own standard so anything you replace it with would have to be heavily customized to fit.

What an exciting time for the industry. Most of the companies are run by 20 or 30 somethings. Nobody has a plan for success. Everything is poised to explode once someone, anyone, figures out how to deliver product at scale. This also ma

No, but in practice it was Win98SE3. Also, it was obsolete before it was even released. There was basically no reason to run WinME instead of WinXP, especially on a new machine.

One thing that helps this is that most of that really buggy hardware has fallen into the wastebin of history and everything attached to a "modern" W98 machine should be plug and play compatible. PCI solved most of these issues.
