A good fraction of the freelance work I have done has required looking up papers (eg the current implementation for https://github.com/jamii/texsearch is based on a bioinformatics paper). It's fine when you only want a single specific pap

You can file online (see https://ewf.companieshouse.gov.uk/help/en/stdwf/doclist06.ht... ). Bear in mind that signing up for webfiling can take a long time. Don't leave it to the last minute. Life is much simpler as a sole trader though.

I went to a friend of a friend who specialises in small businesses. I suppose asking for recommendations on HN might also work.

I registered directly with Companies House a few months ago, after consulting an accountant. It was completely straightforward. I don't see any need to use a third party.

Ah, ok. Swift uses merkle hash trees for error detection which scales down quite nicely. Packets which don't match the hash are just dropped. They seem to be trying to avoid long request-response chains - most messages just cause a state tr

libswift.org is a nice place to start. It compacts and simplifies the tcp/bittorrent stack into 4k lines of cpp. I'm working through an educational port at the moment and will blog about it as I go.

I've never seen Ocaml come even close to C in micro-benchmarks but in large applications it can win on macro-optimisations eg Deens is significantly faster than BIND with much less code (www.utdallas.edu/~hamlen/Slides/Melange.pdf)

A pet hate of mine - the companies page just has a list of icons. Put a short mission statement next to each so people don't have to click through to a hundred different websites just to find out if they are interested.
