Sorry to ressurect but having just experimented with reducing redundant renders in my own game, which isn't even fully real-time, I'm with you. Trying to know when a game may or may not need a new render is a tricky problem, gli

IMO it's one of Zig's advantages over C (text substitution macros are both too powerful and not powerful enough). If you're using Zig without metaprogramming, you're leaving a useful (if advanced) tool on the table.

OP answered the Julia-specific part but I'll chime in with a solid, language-agnostic yes, there are still reasons a GPU dev might want to target specific hardware. GPU hardware at the moment is more vendor-specific than CPUs. Off the

I'm not sure but I would guess it's in the spirit of Zig's "explicit over implicit" philosophy. They are technically different types.

If you don't use zig, you might have missed why that error indicates a stdlib bug. The error in the article is down to a quirk of the type system where literals (like the literal float) have their own unique type (comptime_float) that

Snap! I've been developing a roguelike in zig for nearly exactly a year and my experience is very similar. I especially appreciate your mentioning the positives that come with breaking changes. Seems like you're also a C/C++

Yeah, I like gathering/crafting mechanics but it has to be a focused experience, either I'm out on an adventure and happen to pick up some useful things on the way, or the whole point of the adventure is to pick up one or more thi

AFAIK it's also a structure heavily used by Nethack 3 to manage its astounding complexity. Modern, complex roguelikes seem to be using ECS as an alternative but I think they still have their uses.

Always been possible, but now the time cost of moving data between the GPU and CPU memory is too high to ignore. Branching may be slower on the GPU but it's still faster than moving data to the CPU for a time then back. The maturation

I browse HN on a mobile device so personally, I appreciate seeing a few images and technical details before deciding to thrash my battery on a demo.

Seems like Zig is actually meeting much of the writer's expectations for good language design. Although I'm still not wholly convinced by it's move from LLVM and hell-bent desire for incremental compilation.

Let me highlight some positive things about this: Love the interesting density stratification and the little bubbles that move around. Very foamy or multi-fluid looking. Not sure if it's intentional but the fact a click/touch only
