SpaceX's blog is a great read, particularly the launch descriptions. Going through them is a good way to pass a slow day.

There is an implication of a very interesting math problem just waiting to be investigated. Unique IDs are a natural fit for something like a hash function, but now consider the "roughly sortable" requirement -- how about a homomorphic hash

Troll or not, that was amazing. If not for a few things, it would sound completely legit. Can someone disprove the use of mayonnaise as hair conditioner?

That is a much more interesting article; I particularly like the graphs of predicted densities.

But does Skype via 3G actually cost them more than a WiFi call? Assuming their calls still use the data network, it's not like they have to buy and maintain gateway equipment. I don't see how the smartphone issue is relevant. I agree though

I would like to see normalized versions of these nuumbers, eg density-of-smart-people / population-density. Of course new york city is going to be more dense than oklahoma city, but TFA tells us nothing about the relative densities of smart

Are you being literal about the blackboard/chalkboard, or do you mean a dry erase board?

I am not sure what some of these are supposed to test, like the 0xdeadbeef reference. Geek cred? I am lost on this one, though: "A man pushed his car to a hotel and lost his fortune. What happened?"

I use them too, but can't figure out if TFA is being derisive or not. I always thought Yoda conditions were good defensive programming, especially in C-type languages.

Re: PA Semi, I thought so, too. My guess: if apple made the purchase of intrinsity after they delivered the a4, its probably because they see ongoing value with the chip/team. Future products and all. But two chip acquisitions?

Good list, many are applicable to general hackery and not just ML. "Avoid boilerplate" == DRY/Don't-Repeat-Yourself. OT: I really enjoy jane street posts. They got me started with ocaml, just because I didn't understand half of what they we

And unless I'm mistaken, he wrote the programming environment himself. http://techcrunch.com/2005/08/21/dave-winers-creates-a-purpl... The dude invented RSS, but still. Old dog, new trick?
