This is mind reading only to some extent. They weren't capturing arbitrary thoughts, only the brain's interpretation of spoken words. That is a difference, although still quite a leap.

The general lesson that I take away from this bug is humility: It is hard to write even the smallest piece of code correctly, and our whole world runs on big, complex pieces of code. It surely does if everyone has to write their own binar

I'm Polish myself and I'm not sure I can fully agree with your optimism as there have been a few cases under the current administration in which controversial laws managed to pass thanks to the government's ability to "properly" depict thei

Some simple instructions + JS web applications allowed thousands of people from Poland to DDoS those websites on their own Willful participation in a DDoS doesn't sound like a good idea (being a criminal offense in Poland) just as much as

I don't think testing would be of much help. These challenges are so designed that there is precisely one error in the function and precisely one way to fix it and either you notice it or you don't. If you were able to test your changes on

I don't get the puzzle aversion. Sure, you can stare at someone's code as much as you want to but I don't think you can infer a lot about how their thought processes worked when they were writing it (a proper use of version control helps he

One reason may be that it actually has interesting engineering aspects. The other one may have to do with some sort of self-validation: "Hey, Dropbox is a massive success, can I build something like this?". It's what usually happens to popu

It's neat because it can be used on top of git without any additional effort but it'd be more interesting to see something that leverages git's server-side post-push hook to notify the other clients about changes. gitdocs, depending on the

What he's saying is obviously right but it seems to me that it was the tech press and the marketing people in the industry, that started using the collective HTML5 term for all the new things that have emerged on the Web recently. They're a

Nice demo, thanks for enlightening me of juggernaut's existence! If I were to be picky, it's hard to read anything because the scroll position moves to the end even if you explicitly control it, which it shouldn't. Plus, there's this reliab

Cool. Christmas trees aren't flat though, you could have made it use the whole space rather than one plane. Merry Christmas.

Yes, that too, but that's not what I had in mind. I recall having to adjust the timing after a major block of footage, not permamently as would be the case with a mismatched framerate. Again, it might be a rare problem.

It's been a while since I last used third-party subtitles for a movie but as I recall, it rarely happens that all captions are off by a constant offset. Usually the desynchronization itself stems from a movie version having longer gaps betw

While I agree with the reasoning, I don't like the point being made here. A better one would be to say: be prepared for a possible shutdown of the service you're using if it's free. That means, make sure you can easily take your data out an

Because streaming services wouldn't own rights to artists' work and they wouldn't be tying them down with multirecord deals. With these constraints lifted, there'd only be free market mechanisms left, which would force the services to be ni

What I had in mind were not services but rather Siri clients for non-Apple hardware, which I assume Apple would not be particularly happy about. When Siri comes to iPads and Macs, owners of a much broader range of devices could take an ID a

I wonder if there are any characteristics about the microphone in Apple devices that the servers could check the audio against to prevent this sort of a thing. There should be a way to somewhat distinguish the device used to record a stream

While this problem is indeed easy, what you described is a greedy algorithm and won't give you the most optimal solution and, specifically, could give you a different solution if you shuffled the shreds, which shouldn't be happening. Hint:

I don't want this sound like yet another anti-label rant but as I see it, this is mostly a chicken-egg problem caused by the big labels, that are unlikely to be charging Spotify the same fee per stream but rather a flat fee that is so high

Well, a few months ago I had my go at a service that would use data from people working on machine learning systems so I guess that part is not a big deal. The bigger problem is people are accustomed to typical 'write down the word' CAPTCHA

I'm surprised these techniques are still effective, especially the hidden field trick. It's not rocket science to embed a proper Web layout engine into an application these days so the bots should already be doing that rather than working w
