I actually think the term anti-hacker is great! For years hackers complained about their negative image, and failed to explain the "real" meaning of the word. Now there's a pragmatic solution: just call yourself an anti-hacke

The hardest part about this is accepting that you might be wrong. That your entire world view might be wrong, or one-sided. We humans have this uncanny ability to justify anything we just did, or said. It takes a lot of conscious effort to

I'm sure there are a lot of tech workers who live in the countryside, it's just that we don't hear about them very often. We read mainly about the people in the tech centers, because that's where all the networking happe

I'm pretty sure that pages marked a secure shouldn't contain unencrypted content. If people who are on the same wifi network can see what Youtube videos I'm watching, that's hardly a secure connection, is it?

I actually enjoyed reading this thread. Yes, there are some snarky comments about missing newlines, but there are also a lot of constructive comments here!

For those of us who actually ship code, I'd like to suggest khash[1], which is a pretty nice implementation of a hash table in C. It uses lot's of macros, so if you're looking for a brain teaser you will be satisfied as well

Here's a link to the discussion of one of the related articles on pubpeer https://pubpeer.com/publications/8EB4592F23B61CC3EE7CF29A752... This is pretty factual discussion, and the fraud allegations are very convi

My research involved a lot of programming, and I enjoyed making pretty GUIs for the code I wrote. So I already knew how to make Mac Apps. I made database apps because I saw an opportunity. I had been thinking about doing something more rela

We did move in with my parents for a year after I quit grad school, which lowered our cost of living significantly. But we no longer rely on family now. I'll share numbers too: My revenue this year is around 50000€. (mostly sofware sal

This attitude is exactly what made me leave. I've spent more than seven years at university, three of them paid to do research, and then I get told 'you're not really part of the club yet, you're just a student'.

I'm now an independent software developer. I already had a side project that was doing pretty well (Mac App), and I started to work on a second Mac app that I released last summer. I wrote a bit about it on https://eggerapps

The unfortunate reason for that is a data editor can be whacked out in a couple of weeks (well, at least an MVP). Making object editors takes a lot more effort, especially considering all the different objects PostgreSQL has: schemas, table

If you get too many queries you can hit Cmd-L to clear the display in Terminal. I recently also added a cancel command to stop queries when you forgot a limit clause. I know the Terminal in PG Commander isn't for everybody; maybe I

Supporting Redshift is actually pretty simple. The only problem is that you need to pay for a cluster for testing. However, since it's pay-by-the-hour you can keep charges minimal (don't forget to delete the cluster when you are d

A major problem with the GPL from the point of view of a closed source software vendor is that you can't integrate it into a closed source project. Apple wanted to integrate the compiler more deeply into their IDE, Xcode. GCC didn'
