In a different life I did some freelancing, and worked on an app that had a really bad outage at midnight local time on a seemingly arbitrary Thursday. The first HTTP request that arrived to the company front page after midnight crashed. Ev

For ~95% of my work travel, Starbucks solves this already for me though.. I guess if you’re in a line of work where you travel often, stay long, and the destinations are not where your employer has offices, like maybe sales, devrel, that ki

I realize this isn’t what you’re arguing for, but as a cautionary anecdote on this topic: Paul alludes to it in his post about Healthcare.gov from the other day, but this was apparently one of the major parts of the failure there - endless

I re-read the chain and don’t follow your argument. Do you mean that your original point was about deployments to begin with? FWIW I work in a microservices shop for a global app in an extremely regulation heavy industry, and we run a singl

My experience with pretty much any consumer company is the opposite? They generally help out. Random example: I had an expensive Sonos speaker just the other week that broke in a move across the Atlantic. Sonos support helped for nearly an

A useful/horrifying pattern on this topic: you can use UUIDv1 as a prefixed id, giving you a way to generate tagged IDs in a system that uses UUIDs. You set the node field to a broadcast MAC address, and use that as a namespace/pr
