I think a good rule is that if you're not planning (or able) to confidently deal with an exception and put the app into a known state, then don't catch it. Some developers seem to have a fear of allowing any errors to be seen by the user an

It's a good point. At one time the database was the application. Stored procedures and such were part of the application UI (as it were). At one time features were being added to database systems you could build command-line interfaces

I've seen SQL that looked like this but didn't wind up being very complicated. I've also seen seemingly simple queries that were actually very tricky! I can't read much of the query, but at least a few lines are checking for null values.

From their "What's the Catch" Page 550 minutes, 150 texts, and 300 MB of data using the cell (non wifi) network is what they refer to as their "fair use threshold" and they say that you will get a few warnings to use less cell data and mor

I don't really agree that unit tests should need to be re-written quite as much as indicated in the article. Our unit tests tend to have good coverage at the lower, model level. At the UI level we rely more on usability testing because it

I feel like those guys are projecting their own issues onto the situation. I didn't sense any malice in Kottke's post and certainly nothing that I would compare to high-school bullying.

My opinion is probably tainted by my own working experiences. I've run into various mediocre IT pros who have been at it for a while and possibly are trying to appear smart for purposes of job security. I've only had the pleasure of workin

In my experience just about everybody fancies themselves a great programmer and considers anybody who doesn't know (insert semi-random list of skills) to be a shitty programmer. I kinda think it's like the Roth test for obscenity. I can't

A typical "evil" example is health insurance companies who may be interested in your participation in health-related facebook groups. A good rule of thumb is to just assume that anything you post could be made available to any company.

I do think 3AM is a terrible time to do a release. I'm personally a fan of doing releases in the early morning instead of late night. I'd rather get in the office at 6AM & push the release. Plan for a light day and let everybody leav

When you're working for yourself or in a situation where you can work more hours and make more money (freelance, sales, whatever) then you can lose money by being cheap. Anything that can be hired out at a lower hourly rate than your own s

You may well be right and perhaps there is no future in paid apps. However that should be the choice of the creator/publisher, not somebody who cracks the app and re-publishes it. If their app is worth 99 cents or whatever then people wil

cool web app. i think the difficult part of converting it for mobile would be the screen size necessary to work effectively and possibly getting the touch gestures to work properly for moving and resizing the controls.

That sucks, I have known people like "Ted" and have learned that any bit of flakiness early on (when you should be trying to impress each other) is a bad sign. 1.5 months is not a long time, though, keep at it!

I think the law is only applied when it's in relation to a crime, but it is an interesting thought and shows how an overly broad law could be easily abused.

Probably the bullet points are specific to student/founders. But in the case of us old geezers you run into the same basic concepts. Often people get a "real" job because they need some stability (mental as well as financial) and it becom
