Typical university press release doesn't provide any actually useful information. They have not created anything yet. They have a theoretical design. Good for them I guess.

I spent 3K on a 65" 4K conference room touchscreen monitor. Rather than having a built in smart TV function it has a dock for a SFF PC. It lacks a tuner and don't think it does HDR but it does have surprisingly good sound.

I think a larger mission with some sort of airship dropping little science packages would yield quite a trove of data without the entire mission burning up in an hour. Hopefully the success of the little Martian helicopter gives mission pla

I'd love to see an implementation in silicon carbide so we could drop it on Venus, wait for it to bounce a few times and then start exploring. https://spectrum.ieee.org/the-radio-we-could-send-to-hell

The first thing I thought of when I saw the pacemaker photo was to adapt the miniature RTG to power a digital watch. People have Nixie tube watches, I want my RTG powered watch. I'd use a capacitor to accumulate a charge which would po

The burner is potentially problematic. Inefficient combustion can lead to carbon monoxide, a poorly maintained burner can start a fire. Gas leaks, kerosene spills, etc. Electric refrigeration is much safer. https://www.cpsc.gov&#

My non-electric refrigerator operates along similar lines but uses a propane burner to dissociate ammonia from water in a continuous cycle. Devices such as this can operate on many different heat sources including kerosine. Absorption refri

As a bald-ish dude I have mostly come to terms with my looks, but hair is not just cosmetic. I find that I need to wear a hat constantly, lest I bash my head on things I can't see. The early warning that something is approaching the to

Dumping 165 MW into that device would certainly yield some thrust - at least for a few seconds.

Any craft using this engine would remain stationary. This is just another regurgitation of the emdrive concept except with ions instead of microwaves. They even re-used a rendering of the emdrive.

Wayland is the name of a town. Generic internet searches for "Wayland" often yield results about the software rather than the town, especially because my web search history is quite Linux heavy. Of course this was a tongue-in-chee

I have obtained a couple of dead-battery Dyson vacuums in recent years. Aftermarket replacement batteries are available and so far, so good. The ones I installed offer somewhat increased capacity over the originals and performance is as goo

For a statewide school science competition in 1988, I obtained some sample nitinol springs and attempted to build a rotating engine powered by heat differentials. Unfortunately the ones they sent me were very short so I had to make a recipr

The thing I don't get - and may not be equipped to get - is why we can't make room for people to express themselves as they are without causing them to resort to surgery and hormonal intervention to better fit the available catego

If I were to create such a system today I would take advantage of an inexpensive (~$10-$20) MPPT (maximum power point tracking) solar controller to regulate the unruly DC output of the generator or rectified alternator. It will sweep the in
