I think there should be an option to allow background access to the clipboard. I use a translation app that listens for a copy and pops up a translation on top of what I'm currently doing. I would prefer not to have to switch apps ever

Not that I know of sadly. There's an open issue, but no progress as far as I could see. I haven't tried, but technically Firefox should support the WebExtensions APIs that Chrome uses, so it might be worth trying to manually load

I think this is more about mobile browser choice (Chrome on Android has no extension support). On desktop, Firefox and Chromium are nice alternatives.
