Pay $2000 to a local school to host a time-capsule event where all the kids write letters to themselves for 40 years from now. Pay another $1000 to dig a hole in the school yard and put a proper decorative cover on the thing so people remem

i wondered if this was as gray moral area, but I couldn't find a single reason why this hurts traditional cabbies. In fact, the fact that uber has the cabbies' back in terms of serving the city, makes it a win-win situation for everyone inv

I think a major potential for disruption is right here under our nose. Instead of approaching it from a political point of view (blame those politicians!) why don't someone with money create an alternative community-supported system of work

Look at Node.js, where exceptions don't necessarily travel up written code, begetting the convention of passing an error object, similar to what the OP proposes. I don't like it, I don't think anyone particularly likes it. It makes you miss

I estimate roughly around 500 small housing units from what I've seen. The smallest units are about 60*30feet in size. For a slave labor camp, it would be easy to fit 100 people in each unit with two story bunk beds. That's already 50,000 p

From my experience with Node.js, your interpretation is correct. I also share your optimism for finding a general solution to this problem, but that's exactly what jerf said isn't worth the complexity once you implement it. Even if you do m

This may surprise some, but implementing blocking semantics on top of non-blocking semantics in node.js is impossible.

Thanks for this, you've nailed the problem. I'm looking for a language that can do everything that Node.js does but also solves this control flow problem, but is also fast and has support for OpenCL and beefy math libraries. I don't find

Given any long-running task, there are two natural things to do: 1. Do something while the long-running task is running 2. Do something after the long-running task has completed Node.js' callback function convention simply makes it

I chose Node.js for no reason other than Fun. Coffeescript gives it a good spike as well. Klonoar, follow the github repo for future diversions from HN, or make a pull request and I'll see it through to the live site.
