That's just not what we're trying to do with Django's template language. However, if you'd like a template language that's closer to pure Python, I'd suggest giving Cheetah ( http://cheetahtemplate.org/ ) a try. I've used it in the past; qu

I'm curious: do you have any idea what that'd cost? My impression is that anyone who's actually worth paying would cost well beyond what the DSF could actually afford. That said, stuff like this is why the DSF exists in the first place, so

We've not checked this in yet precisely because, as you say, that good review is important. We don't have anyone in our core community who's a security expert, so that's precisely why we've tried to reach out to the broader web development

I've been very happy with Rackspace Cloud, and especially with how well it scales down -- as low as $10/mo. It's not quite all the flexibility that Amazon does, but the API's nice and getting better, and for personal stuff the smaller size

How long does it take to fail over to a second data center? Can you do it in less than 26 seconds? I can't.

Propaganda certainly wasn't my goal; I'm sorry the post came across that way. It's a fact that open source consistently produces incredible software; I'm trying to feel my way towards some reasons why that might be. Thinking out loud is tou

Keep in mind: these are proposed features -- as in, proposed by anyone with enough smarts to edit a wiki page -- not necessarily ones that'll make it into 1.2. That proposal, in particular, is a Big Honking Deal with basically no concrete

This meme is a silly amateur-hour wheel re-invention and ignorance of history. Yeah, well fuck you too. As it turns out, I am an amateur, at least when it comes to POSIX, but more importantly I find this stuff fun. I hadn't realized t

I've spent the last two weeks at Python conferences in Argentina and Brazil, have been following the news from DjangoCon, and like to think I've got a pretty good pulse on the Python web community. I'd hardly characterize the Python web com

Minor correction. The removal of the GIL is not disallowed by fiat. To piggyback: don't forget that CPython ≠ Python. The GIL is an implementation detail of CPython, not a feature of the language. Other Pythons -- Jython, for one -- have

I worry that’s going to be the Android community — forever talking about the next year’s batch of phones, because the ones available now just are second-rate. That's my worry, too. I remember hearing for what feels like a decade that Linu

The best single work I've read on the subject is Van Lindberg's _Intellectual Property and Open Source_ ( http://www.amazon.com/dp/0596517963/ ). I don't think it's quite "talk to me like I'm a 3 year old" territory -- it assumes a basic un

Yeah, that's really the nut of the problem, isn't it. Short of finding a lawyer qualified to speak to these issues -- which I can't afford -- my only other option is to simply avoid the GPL. Which sucks.

Y'know, this bug report deals with running Django's test suite, which is really a worst-case scenario. The test suite loads hundreds -- even thousands -- of models into memory, and does many complicated and costly operations. It's a unit te
