I believe you need 2 karma to post links (to avoid bots probably). I've upvoted your comment so I think you'll be able to post links now.

CodeAcademy.com currently redirects to CodeCademy.com (I suspect CodeCademy bought the domain now that they have investment money).

The countries that perform well on international standardized tests generally spend much less money per student, but a teaching job is much more prestigious than it is in the U.S. I personally think that explanation fits both the "cost is o

Good point; I agree this makes code much more naturally machine graded than essays, and a statistical classifier for source code sounds disturbing (although it might do better on grading style than the usual autograding does).

I upvoted you for the interesting line of thought, although I disagree with the premise that acceptability of grading algorithmically implies acceptability of writing algorithmically. In CS, we often grade assignments automatically, althoug

I agree, banks having this flawed security is quite frightening! My bank used to have an 8 character password limit policy, but recently changed it (without announcing it), and I was able to use a 20+ character password. It's worth re-tryin

Here's the initial thread: http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=3618082 My impression was it was more a feature of clickpass's implementation being outdated and requiring maintenance than OpenID not being useful, although there was sentime

Unfortunately, I think most mobile devices still forbid JIT (aside from integrated javascript implementations). The technical limitation was removed in iOS 5.0, but I believe whether Apple will accept apps using JIT is still an open questio

You should be unbanned in about a day. I had this happen to me (and learned that Ctrl-R in Chrome has little to no delay between sending millions of requests), and was unbanned about a day later.

Heartily agree on Lua. Embedding lua was one of the best library experiences I've ever had. The implementation and language is small and simple, and I think many people undervalue that. Compiling it was as simple as dragging the source file

Next launch window Tuesday, May 22. They seem to have a good process for handling the failure though, which is probably more important than how they handle success (although less exciting for viewers).

I'm not sure why Microsoft wants to exclude other browsers from Windows RT. Since many people hate IE, wouldn't having more browser choice be a benefit? Mozilla or Google could probably offer a better browser on Windows RT than Microsoft. D

I keep a list of my favorite (vaguely) CS-related quotes. At some point I stumbled upon this: "I think Microsoft named .NET so it wouldn't show up in a Unix directory listing." (It was attributed to "Oktal", and I believe it was from the St

I can't respond on technical, as I haven't used TLC. As to Apple's TOS (I can't seem to find TLC's), I'm pretty sure you can write a full-blown iOS app in Lua. You can already write a complete iOS game in Lua: http://www.anscamobile.com/co

I personally run chrome and block all plugins by default, and enable them when I think I have a good idea what the plugin is doing. You can then set specific sites that may always run plugins, so it's not overly annoying when on a few flash
