We cited the variation is for sold out tickets. That's the segment of the market that we deal with. We have the data to figure out this number, it just wasn't a stat I had on the top of my head since we focus on sold out events.

There are a lot of reasons, but here are the two largest: 1) We've modeled how much we could make as a "hedge fund". We think we could turn $500k into another $500k in a year. We'd need to raise money to be able to do that. The upside fo

I think there are plenty of people who can do it well enough considering the constraints of startup. Adobe and Apple shouldn't conflate these roles, but if you're a startup who can only hire 5-6 people you don't have that luxury.

Duly noted, thanks. I don't think this is flag-worthy; I mildly enjoyed it. I'm just curious why his posts do so extraordinarily well here.

I think Dustin is a supremely talented designer, and I find his writing generally engaging, but remain perplexed by how everything he posts, no matter how mundane, flies to the top of HN.

Yeah, priceline is high risk/reward. Sometimes you get an amazing deal, sometimes you get stuck in a place with bedbugs (I've been there). Although you can probably largely protect against this by only specifying hotels with 3+ stars.

Would be curious to know how he actually evaluates determination when analyzing startups. How can you tell?

My previous startup, Scribnia, was rejected a year ago. We ended up with a nice exit, selling to a content network. It's also top 100k on Compete.

Jim Collins' books are based on pseudo-research. Phil Rosenzweig does a beautiful job of showing this in The Halo Effect: http://www.amazon.com/Halo-Effect-Business-Delusions-Manager...

Weird question, but how did he go about offering to buy? Offering to buy someone lunch can be a little awkward, especially in situations where it isn't usually done. My hypothesis is that they way someone pulls this off is the differentiat

Why is he so adamant about not communicating a valuation? Is it because if you don't give one, there's a chance the VC will value you higher than the valuation you would have communicated?

It's a ridiculous caricature of what investor-entrepreneur relations are like. I find the show vaguely nauseating. But even if you enjoy watching, realize that it's an entertainment gimmick, nothing more. I doubt many of the "deals" are e

Was the shutdown at all related to the need to get licensed as a money transfer agent? I know that's a very expensive process (since you have to go state by state) and I know you guys were thinking about doing it. How did that end up play

I register through Google Apps. They use GoDaddy as the actual registrar, but the process of buying a domain through them is uber-simple; the complete opposite of GoDaddy's constant upsell.

Yeah, I've used 99designs in the past but I've never been completely satisfied with work from there. I find that even the best results look a bit amateurish compared to the work of a high-quality web designer.

It's cool and useful--the thing is there are a ton of cool/useful apps that COULD be built on top of craigslist, but craigslist does everything in its power to prevent that from happening. Is there a reason you won't get shut down?

Anyone wondering how this can be a profitable decision for TC? Do they gross so much off TC50 that they can afford to give away $4M for an edge in a contest they were already winning by a landslide?
