I'm not listening to them I'm listening to science, the discipline that has given us pretty much all our quality of life improvements. It's suspicious how many in this thread are pointing out that fossil fuels are an essentia

India and China are both investing heavily in renewables, this is a tired trope. Renewable energy is also cost effective compared to fossil fuels in many cases and has been for years. This also excludes the massive externalities of fossil f

Thanks that is kind of you. For the time being I would rather not tie my real life identity to my Internet identity.

I do work in tech, doesn't mean the country isn't a failing mess that is becoming worse to live in by the year. If you have a high demand job, that gives you leverage to move to a country that isn't shooting itself in the foo

The article doesn't blame global warming directly and does mention the drought. What is your problem?

I wouldn't suggest putting the UK in that list, absolutely crumbling and showing no signs of stopping.

In the worse case management thinks the dev didn't do anything at all and are less likely to assign similar work in the future. In my experience, yes, companies love any way of gaining prestige and contributing to OS is one of them. Fo

Some really bad takes here. If OPs story holds up, their employerer paid them to work on OS software and they spent time and expertise debugging and fixing an issue. Not receiving credit here diminished the likelihood their employer will co

I mean race conditions between the operations, e.g. an update followed by a delete: 1. update x in memory 2. delete x in memory 3. update fn checks for file on disk 4. delete x from disk 5. update x on disk Is this not possible and you en

Awesome, love to see more Java devs pushing back on the spring madness. In Db.java, with the write/update/delete locks, that mutate both in memory and on disk, is there not a bunch of race conditions there?

I think a key difference is that humans very rarely sound convincing talking about subjects they have no clue about. I've seen the hallucination rate of LLMs improve significantly, if you stick to well covered topics they probably do q

In a market you don't need to replace it, you replace millions of hours of building/testing/documenting apps and you've effectively reduced demand for SWE labour (ignoring the potential for new job creation).

If you scroll to the top of the thread, it's a person mentioning their wife finds remote work isolating. This weird grandstanding about having a social life every time remote works comes up on HN is sad.

Not to defend orocle but AOT java is for reduced startup time and memory usage and that is quite clear from the docs. There is part that describes it as "fast" that could be a bit misleading, though it does qualify even that.
