Hong Hong also has a growing startup community: http://www.hksua.com.hk/ And there's efforts in getting the communities in the two cities to better work together (such as the Web Wednesday groups).

Yeah, isn't 7-11 in Asia amazing ? Not only can you run your life through convenience stores, but they are ubiquitous. It's hard to walk two or three blocks without bumping into one.

My high school senior year English instructor required the same of all her students. No "to be" words in any assignments. I have to say, the lesson did improve my writing.

It's not like Mercurial is all that unpopular. Sun has switched its open source projects to hg. Mozilla is using it as well. All the subversion committers I know prefer hg over git as well.

Again, Sun makes more money from Java than people realize. Maybe not a huge amount, but licensing the embedded and mobile JVM still brings in revenue. This is why Sun put the JVM under the GPL the way it did, so it can continue to license

"Java, OpenOffice and MySQL are neat. Know anybody who's paid money for them?" Yes. Java still makes money for Sun for embedded and mobile devices. The licensing costs for a mobile JVM are reasons why you see the rather unique approaches

Apache has hundreds (1000+) of committers across it's 60 projects, all of which successfully use a single SVN repository (which is how subversion was designed to be used).
