As one increases more dimensions, it becomes increasingly likely that at least one of them will be an "extreme" value (i.e. point is at the edge of the hypercube ). In the random() * random() * random() ... , once you draw at leas

I think there is a link with curse of dimensionality here. As you add more randoms, most of the points lie close to the surface. This is also the case in high dimensional spheres: most of volume lie near the surface of the hyper sphere.

One thing I noticed is that certain “slippery/slimey” textures are not as appreciated in American culture compared to Asian. Eg, chicken feet, sea cucumber, tendon. It is as if Americans like very crispy or very creamy, but not much in

R is king for analysis of tabular data e.g. data exploration, model fitting, and visualizations where all the code can be contained in one .R file. R not as good as other languages for production-level work though or for analyzing non-tabul

I am curious now, what do you use instead of lapply (or other *apply variants)?

The parallel code structure looks very different from the standard for loops in python. So there is a lot of rewriting to get things to work on parallel in python compared to R. In R you just replace lapply with mclapply.

R is hard to parallelise compared to python? lapply(list, DoSomething) To parallelise to 16 cores , rewrite as mclapply(list, DoSomething, mc.cores = 16) What’s the equivalent in python ?

The best use case IMO for iPad is sheet music. Playing or sight reading is great on iPad, almost as good as paper.

Correct. The conservatory music exams require scales to be played from first level to last level. However each level demands faster tempo, evenness in volume, and a smooth “pulse” (like BB gun pellets hitting a wall)

The nuance here is that sometimes work from home is more productive, sometimes office is more productive. When initially figuring out what the “problem” actually is then it is better when people are together. When the problem has been well

What many don’t realise in academia is that your reputation is more important than your results. The two are of course related but those who are dishonest mistakenly think their results are more important.

In academia, how long one takes to move is a function of seniority. Months at the junior level, but famous scientists moving can take years.

I think the claim that PhDs and postdocs are fungible is what enables credit to be concentrated to the PI. In top places though, it’s often the case that trainees have an idea, get shut down by PI, trainee demonstrates project can work, the
