Thank you for remembering this. Also worth pointing out that they too ruined their launch experience for millions because of features no one really wanted that were secondary to the core experience ;) (IIRC they did some sort of light simul

Many large companies in manhattan participate in pretax programs that allow people (myself included) to get a monthly metro card for ~60 dollars. So yeah these types of programs will never compete with that.

Before you get all excited about this, it's ONLY UberPOOL and your destination must start and end in Manhattan. So if you use this to commute for two weeks you're paying 10 (edit: obviously 100/20 = 5, it's early. leave

While the thing you're responding to is obviously idiotic it occurs to me that the sanity of the valuation of Yahoo! is not "obvious" at all. It's a result of the application of partially visible heuristics to determine

I would say this is the more important thing. I would argue that even if you are under-performing when held to a certain set of standards, if you _love_ doing it then whatever. If you _don't_ love doing it then you should switch career

I don't think you're responding to what I actually said. Perhaps it was poorly worded but what I intended to say was twofold: I am a member of the group (the privileged class in america) and that I exhibited prejudice. I made no f

Thanks. This is what I was going to try to explain but was too tired to bother. Also, as a member of the white male american engineer group, I will 100% cop to this sort of prejudice when dealing with generalizations as in the parent articl

Sorry, I'm unclear how what I said was racist :/ Edit: To be clear I used those examples because they are the majority in America (which I should have been more clear about) in an effort to point out that the majority often does n

Ah, I should have specified software engineering. However as an example, there have been a good amount of studies that show that problem solving (detection and solution generation) are enabled by diversity† Combined with this, many studies

Maybe it's a rhetorical failure then? I feel like to get that reading requires you to assume a lot about the emphasis placed on the word "And".

There are definitely ways this _could_ make sense in the context of the article but you're right that without proper explanation is seems at best heartless and at worst pretty racist.

I believe the salient point that "the goal is basically to provide for themselves everything that their mothers no longer do" is a direct effect of lack of diversity in our field. Homogenous, largely white, largely male, largely s

I'm fine with that, though I have noticed in years participating in _this_ community that it vocally penalizes strongly worded criticism. This is, of course, stupid.

Definitely don't get in the way of criticism. But do _get_ criticism. There is a big and meaningful distinction. "Don't read the comments" is a clickbait article title: worse than having haters is developing an echo cham

I think you may want to decouple your ethical analysis from which private company is making the most money. Remember that the only functional difference between you and somewhere like kayak.com or padmapper is business relationships.
