I was going to comment nearly this exact thing. SSC guy has worked slavishly for years to grow a fan base which has had knock-on effects as the community he’s carefully curated intersects with some that have done incredible harm on twitter

I think you might be missing my point: often the conditions are not correctable by the individual. They can only be resolved by collective action, and we can’t really start on that until we stop holding people responsible for things they do

To start, I hope that if you're talking about yourself you are doing ok. But yes I think its possible all of the things you're talking about put together. The long term effects of the extreme wealth gap are so broad they're d

I dont know if this is true of everyone but I definitely see this in online communities. People who have access to basic health services still blame themselves for their own conditions and seek individual solutions to collective problems :&

Not to reduce a complex topic to an aphorism but: if the world is configured in a way thats antagonistic towards you, a negative response is understandable. A lot of this stuff fits neatly into a tradition of blaming people for their condit

I run k8s in production and I think this is a really bizarre axe to grind that sort of smells like someone who got upset by how steep the kubernetes learning curve is. Which, in a way, is understandable. > 1) Add hundreds of new failure

This is not true. I currently live in a really nice apt that I rent. My landlord hasn’t substantially raised my rent in 3 years. I will eventually buy once I find something that motivates me but what actually empowers me to negotiate buying

That’s good for us as non-landlords though. I just want to live here. I don’t care about their ability to profit off of the demand which, by the way, has lead to a large amount of housing stock being left vacant!

Marx wrote a letter of congratulations to Lincoln when he was elected as well, as a referendum on slavery. It would be silly to think that is uncritical support of the country tho.

I find this sort of funny in an “everything old is new again” sort of way. There are some up—and-coming areas around downton LA that we’re partially covered high streets (somewhat mall-like) that are having their second and third floors tur

I missed this comment in response to mine and yes, I wonder about negative reactions to what is a relatively dispassionate recounting of historical events.

I've lived in NYC for nearly 10 years, have no plans to leave, and would really, really welcome a rent or apartment price reduction. However, I've been promised this magical thing every time there's some sort of disaster or t

For 15+ years I have noticed a certain set of people trying to make a claim that people are leaving or desire to leave "the cities" for the suburbs or rural areas in America. NYC growth has slowed since 2017, and certainly there w

Anonymous attestation is really interesting because, afaict, there really isn't a way to do this right now if my application wants to authenticate a "normal" user with a "normal" phone.

Worth noting that the solution is simple. If you want to end homelessness, you give the homeless houses. It turns out we have a ton of empty houses and apartments in America. If that’s not palatable I’d be more interested in looking at why.

Stopping workers coming in from one place isn’t about making sure Americans have jobs tho. It doesn’t magically change the cost of rent. It doesn’t magically educate the uneducated. Nor should it. This is about being able to report to middl

They don’t have to be so secretive. The Snowden leaks told us that companies like Microsoft collaborate with the IC to backdoor their software.

To be fair we know from the Snowden leaks this is exactly what they do. Microsoft quite proudly cooperated with the NSA to backdoor it’s own apps.

This comment is why it's important to be more precise than the word "authoritarian." We all live under an "authoritarian regime" to one degree or another. The problem in this case is that its institutionally racist

No, the history taught about ghandi carefully selects instances of "non-violence". I don't think ghandi is responsible for how we learn about ghandi in the west. Just like MLK is regarded as "peaceful" when in fact
