Good penmanship, by the way (date: 1988). Do young kids today get to practice their handwriting much? Good stuff so far: "By evoking the need for deep conceptual hierarchies, the automatic computer confronts us with a radically new intelle

What does it mean to be a "scientist" in the US? Is it strictly a person in academia who is in the pursuit of research grants? Does it also include private sector researchers and engineers?

I once wrote a brainfuck interpreter in assembler which would run at boot time. It's Turing completeness closer to the machine. But the internet already thought of that and crazier things: http://www.masella.name/technical/BF-CPU.pdf

There are only two camps in this debate: cut taxes (to grow the economy and increase gov revenue) vs. increase taxes (to directly increase gov revenue). There is almost no talk about the underlying problem: spending.

This is a momentary media phenomenon, like the stories about Obama around the time of the elections. That said, it would be nice to have a way to filter out duplicate stories posted at the same time.

"The largest public works project undertaken in the state in 50 years" The sheer size and scope of the thing will make it vulnerable to corruption. The costs are probably understated. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Dig It's sad that you

The claim is that Assage is selling some of the secret documents on the side instead of making them public. Is there some proof to that?

Your laptop may be marginally safer from irrecoverable theft (if the thief doesn't bother to reinstall the OS), but it becomes vulnerable to the LockItTight service. They are, after all, getting a live feed of your location and keystrokes.

The idea is that the Singularity would be a point in time where the totality of human expert knowledge would be insufficient to comprehend what an AI (or an AI-designed AI) would be capable of comprehending. If we think human-level AI is po

McCarthy was somewhat right in that the administration, secret services and universities were riddled with Communists. He may have been wrong about who exactly was a Communist or wrong about his methods, though.
