This has been on my bookmark list since I read it many years ago and I reread it whenever I have to refresh on js fundamentals. Kudos for resurfacing it.

Yup, distinctly remember we had programming lessons in second grade on one of those, right before the regime fell. I am not sure if that was the reason I ended up writing software for a living but it sure did not hurt. Emphasis on science,

IANAL, but from what I have heard from lawyers here in Canada, cutting %20 of your salary all other things being equal is considered a "constructive dismissal" and you can sue your employer for that.

Yes, as much as demographic decline is a big problem, the bigger one is the total and deep institutional corruption.

Nitpick: giving slack usually means being less strict, perhaps you meant flak as in excessive and abusive criticism.

Someone give this link to Neal Stephenson pronto :) I've vaguely remember him trying to kick start a sword game several years ago.

I think you are on to something here, breaking it down by metro regions. In Ontario, it is pretty much GTA vs the rest of the province, as much so that the easing of COVID restrictions as of now proceeds separately for Toronto for example.

Lives will be disrupted either way, lifting restrictions too early will result in more deaths, which is the ultimate disruption of life.

It's not hard, but it's a manual process which is always prone to errors or oversights. Having to support lots of versions just smells a little fishy to me, maybe justifiable if you have some type of firmware/hardware tie-in.
