In some areas, like trading and even chess, there is an element of randomness that makes it impossible to isolate pure skill. Maybe in some kinds of racing, either in cars, bicycles or on foot (or the million other kinds like kayaking etc),

I feel obliged to point out that when people try and equate behavior that is completely within the bounds of what society considers normal (being gay) with what can be a crippling and life affecting condition, it does nobody a service. Anym

I like this analogy a lot. Nature has a special place for us so conservation is (mostly) obvious, including ideas like negative externalities. But I agree with you that we should be thinking of the online world in the same way, even if its

A bigger challenge is that arguments on issues are often actually a proxy for some deeper cause: climate change debates ostensibly are about science, but seem mostly about whether we redistribute wealth or exercise control over people. Same

I'm easily distracted so getting a message breaks my focus anyway. If that's going to happen, I'd rather it happen in one call than in a prolonged back and forth by chat, and then eventually a call. If I really need to focus

Haha I can understand why that bothers you of course, but I find it amusing that I feel exactly the opposite way. I would usually much prefer that someone try phoning me or (of initiating a call on slack or zoom) that go through the "h

I'm concerned about the idea of open source turning into teaser content, the main goal of which is to get people to pay to unlock "sponsors only" content.

I look at this whole idea another way: if your results are so fragile that they need a docker container (with all the caveats others are mentioning about versions etc), it's not really "reproducible" just because someone can

I have a dual boot machine with windows 7 on it. I boot into windows about once a year to try something or another. The machine is from 2013 and was pretty good back then, Latitude laptop with a Core i5 and 8GB ram. I still use it regularly

Interesting - if you had a parsing language defined, you could combine raw data with transformations, e.g. float_name 5.75 DUP MUL float so the transformed data gets loaded in. Could be cool for arrays or more complex data where you want to

Maybe an unpopular opinion here but I think people should have a platform where they can safely coordinate activities that those in power don't agree with. Limiting peoples ability to organize is a decent into a police state IMO. Grant

A lot of pedants are telling you it's not censorship and they are technically correct, these private platforms are within their rights to decide how they are used. And many people have raised concerns before about what it means that we
