The government (at least in Sweden) already imposes really high taxes. And people here are still generally wealthy as fuck (relative to most of the world) and able to use a large chunk of their income for beer, trendy clothes, smartphones,

This leads to an interesting digression... My hacker's mind sees society the same way it sees ie software layers, kernels, APIs, libraries, etc. And from that POV, current society practices seem very inefficient and disorganized, and could

This is very interesting. Did not realize that mobile phones are so common in Africa. What kind of makes/models are typical? I would imagine that they are more low-tech than in the first world? Ideas for startups focused on this market? Hig

Why can't social responsibility be handled at a different layer, though? Why is it the individual businessman who has to pay special taxes for things like that? Why not just take it from general taxes across the board? Here in Sweden, emplo

In the weight training community, yoga is seen as problematic because it involves a lot of spinal flexion (ie bending the spine forward). This is seen as a general no-no (which is why sit-ups are generally viewed as bad as well today). Stua

What is a human right anyway? Ask an Ayn Rand fan, a libertarian, a Hobbesian, the United Nations, or a Swedish legal positivist, and you willl get different answers. We need to define these things, otherwise the discussion becomes a clash

I don't have the exact statistics, but it wouldn't surprise me if it's the other way around in Sweden, automatics being the more uncommon choice. Supposedly, automatics incur a few percent more gas usage. And gas is really expensive here.

Holy fuck you Americans are well paid... 80k is a very respectable salary here in Sweden. Hell, I know plenty of programmer working for 40k a year. In the US it seems like the norm for recompense is 100k+. What gives?

Exactly. I weigh free time as FAR more important than money. As long as I'm over some threshold of income, time is by far the most important outcome. Spending all my time working on someone else's projects is simply not an option to me (unl

If we are in the Matrix, then it would not be strange if we could change our physical reality with thought alone. There is no spoon, and all that. Napoleon Hill talked about this in "Think and grow rich". http://knol.google.com/k/tom-butle

Also, if the "basic tenets of existence" (whatever you consider those to be) can be torn down by looking at them critically, shouldn't they be? (Perhaps.) Should we look at Cthulhu just because we can? :p
