It doesn't, the authors are calling this out to limit the scope of linearizability to per-object. You're thinking about strict serializability. The authors mention that transactions can be implemented in a way to support this by i

Our network definitely makes a big difference, but even we don't just use straight up vanilla Paxos.

Need some non holiday time to read this fully, but it's worth noting that aside from Spanner, Cloud Datastore (using Megastore tech) and Cloud Firestore (using the same tech as Cloud Spanner) all do Paxos across several data centers o

It does not use CRDTs as they cannot be used to handle all the update requirements of this system. It uses Paxos as the consensus algorithm, along with internal systems like the TrueTime API to enable us synchronously replicate across multi

Sure, it's strongly consistent on the server-side part (strict serializability), whereas for the mobile/web clients we make sure we move you through consistency snapshots with the real-time sync functionality.

Great question! I'm the PM for both Cloud Datastore and Cloud Firestore. The biggest difference is the integration with Firebase, so you have access to Mobile (iOS/Android) and Web SDKs along with a native offline mode. This comes

Except, given that both models ended up #1, and #2 respectively, doesn't it imply that both models can work and other factors are more important in success? Following that, doesn't it imply that shareholders should/will care

I thank you for the compliment, but I am a lowly PM rather than an engineer, that doesn't find Cloud Databases [1] any more esoteric than the Cloud in general. :) You'll probably find there are a lot of distributed database geeks

Thanks for the feedback! I happy to hear you gave it a shot and I've heard several times about it being used successfully from Lambda (hopefully people can look at GCP's Cloud Functions now, but I'm biased). Sorry to hear it
