Interesting. I always believed the name came from the 3M CEO at that time, William McKnight, who was of Scottish origin. There were other Scottish inspired product names as well. Today the 3M country club is still called Tartan Park.

The space and aerospace programs of the sixties produced some really impressive technologies and facilities. Too bad government spending on technology research went down, just imagine what could be possible.

Not only eastern cultures have the concept. In German there is the phrase 'a steady water drop hollows a stone' and it actually traces back to the Roman author Ovid 'gutta cavat lapidem'. Perseverance is just so much

Both IBM and Sony sold their PC business. Dell showed us how well stand alone PC business with low margins fares on the stock market. I wonder why HP toke a different approach, no buyer, no immediate need for cash or something else?

I used an East German version of the KIM (LC80) for lab experiments. In 1999! Tying in code was slow and debugging even slower, but the hardware I/O was easy, no fuzzing around with RS232. Ahhh, good times.
